Establishing Remodeling Priorities
Get More by Determining Your Remodeling Priorities in Advance
Once you have made the decision to remodel, the next important
thing to do is to establish your remodeling priorities. This
will help you and your remodeler develop a project that gives
you the most value for your dollar. Here are some recommendations
for sorting out your remodeling priorities.
Deciding What You Should Build
1. Some people use the “bucket” method. This approach
involves sorting remodeling possibilities into the bucket categories
of things you “need,” things you “want,” and
things you “would like to have but could live without.”
2. Others use the “pain and importance” method.
This involves making a list of the things that cause you pain
or frustration in your home and then ranking them in order of
importance.
3. A third method for determining your priorities
is the “value
engineering” method. This is most helpful with larger projects,
when you are deciding what portion of your remodeling budget
to allocate to each aspect of the project. For example, if you
love cooking, you might decide that you want to put more of your
budget into your kitchen and less into other areas of your home.
Price, Quality, Service
Do not forget to consider your priorities when it comes to price,
quality, and service. Be realistic. Do you really think you
can get inspired design, high quality craftsmanship and materials,
and great service from a remodeler offering you a low price?
Generally, you get what you pay for: good quality and good
service costs a little more. A good value is getting the right
blend of price, quality, and service for your project.
Choose the Right Remodeler
Once you have determined the priorities for your project, the
next step is selecting your remodeler. Be sure to think about
what is important for you in a remodeler: Reputation? Experience
and expertise? Quality design? The level of service? Dig deep
and ask questions to prospective remodelers – they are
not all built the same. Remember, your remodeler will not only
be responsible for improving your house and building your dreams,
they will be working in your home for an extended period of
time. You need to have full faith in your remodeler in order
to be comfortable and confident with them working in your home.
